Reading

Our reading program will focus on the following objectives based on the students’ grade levels and Virginia Standards.

Objectives:

Grade K

Students will be able to :

  • Identify and name the uppercase and lowercase letters of the alphabet.
  • Develop an understanding of basic phonetic principles and expand vocabulary.
  • Match consonant, short vowel, and initial consonant digraph sounds to appropriate letters.
  • Demonstrate comprehension of fictional texts by retelling stories, using beginning, middle, and end and identify characters, setting, and events.

Grade 1

Students will be able to :

  • Apply phonetic principles to read and spell by using beginning and ending consonant sound.
  • Learn two-letter consonant blends and diagraphs.
  • Learn Blend beginning, middle, and ending sounds to recognize and read words.
  • Read and spell commonly used sight words.
  • Read and demonstrate comprehension of a variety of fictional and non-fictional texts.
  • Make and confirm predictions.
  • Identify characters, setting, and important events.
  • Retell stories and events, using beginning, middle, and end.
  • Identify the main idea or theme.

Grade 2

Student will be able to :

  • Use phonetic strategies when reading and spelling.
  • Use knowledge of short, long, and r-controlled vowel patterns to decode and spell words.
  • Use knowledge of homophones, prefixes, suffixes, antonyms, and make predictions.
  • Main idea and supporting details.
  • Describe characters, setting, and important events in fiction and poetry.
  • Identify the problem and solution.
  • Summarize stories and events with beginning, middle, and end in the correct order.

Grade 3

Students will be able to :

  • Use knowledge of regular and irregular vowel patterns.
  • Use knowledge of homophones, roots, affixes, synonyms, and antonyms.
  • Compare and contrast settings, characters, and events.
  • Identify the author’s purpose.
  • Draw conclusions about text.
  • Use reading strategies to monitor comprehension throughout the reading process.
  • Differentiate between fiction and nonfiction.

Grade 4

Student will be able to :

  • Use context to clarify meanings of unfamiliar words.
  • Use knowledge of roots, affixes, synonyms, antonyms, and homophones.
  • Read and demonstrate comprehension of fictional texts, narrative nonfiction texts, and poetry.
  • Explain the author’s purpose and identify the main idea and supporting details.
  • Draw conclusions/make inferences about text.
  • Make, confirm, or revise predictions and identify cause and effect.

Grade 5

Student will be able to :

  • Expand vocabulary when reading.
  • Use context to clarify meaning of unfamiliar words and phrases.
  • Use knowledge of roots, affixes, synonyms, antonyms, and homophones.
  • Identify an author’s use of figurative language.
  • Read and demonstrate comprehension of fictional texts, narrative nonfiction, and poetry.
  • Describe character by identifying traits.
  • Describe the development of plot and explain the resolution of conflict.
  • Describe the characteristics of free verse, rhymed, and patterned poetry.
  • Describe how an author’s choice of vocabulary contributes to the author’s style.
  • Identify cause and effect relationships.

Grade 6

Student will be able to :

  • Use roots, cognates, affixes, synonyms, and antonyms to expand vocabulary.
  • Use context and sentence structure to determine meanings and differentiate among multiple meanings of words.
  • Identify and analyze figurative language.
  • Read and demonstrate comprehension of a variety of fictional texts, narrative nonfiction, and poetry.
  • Identify the elements of narrative structure, including setting, character, plot, conflict, and theme.
  • Make, confirm, and revise predictions.
  • Describe cause and effect relationships and their impact on plot.
  • Use information in the text to draw conclusions and make inference.
  • Identify and analyze the author’s use of figurative language, transitional words and phrases that signal an author’s organizational pattern.
  • Use reading strategies to monitor comprehension throughout the reading process.

Grade 7 & 8

Student will be able to :

  • Read to determine the meanings and pronunciations of unfamiliar words and phrases within authentic texts.
  • Identify word origins and derivations and use roots, cognates, affixes, synonyms, and antonyms to expand vocabulary.
  • Identify and analyze figurative language and connotations.
  • Use context and sentence structure to determine meanings and differentiate among multiple meanings of words.
  • Read and demonstrate comprehension of a variety of fictional texts, narrative nonfiction, and poetry.
  • Describe the elements of narrative structure including setting, character development, plot structure, theme, and conflict.
  • Compare and contrast various forms and genres of fictional text.
  • Identify conventional elements and characteristics of a variety of genres.
  • Describe the impact of word choice, imagery, and literary devices including figurative language.
  • Make, confirm, and revise predictions and use prior and background knowledge as a context for new learning.
  • Make inferences and draw conclusions based on the text.
  • Identify cause and effect relationships and use reading strategies to monitor comprehension throughout the reading process.
